Scholarship
The promotion and portrayal of contemporary art is a central undertaking of the ZF Art Foundation. Since 1996, the foundation provides scholarships for artists from Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland.
The scholarship comprises a comprehensive support program: the artists receive financial support, and are provided with the studio as well as an apartment. Subsequently, the works of the nine-month scholarship will be presented to the public in an exhibition at the Zeppelin Museum Friedrichshafen for which the ZF Art Foundation will publish an extensive catalog. Moreover, the press and public relations work will be provided to complement the stipendiaries’ activities.
Major importance is accorded to intense cooperation and direct exchange with the artists. Personal contact and involvement with their work are maintained even after completion of the scholarship. At the annual stipendiary meetings, exchange among artists is promoted, and questions pertinent to art and its promotion are discussed.
In 2008 the ZF Art Foundation changed the award procedure for the artist in residence program from public tender to a system with nominations made by experts:
The award process for the scholarship consists of two stages: Six external, independent art experts from Austria, Germany, and Switzerland nominate artists who can apply for the scholarship.
In a second step a jury of six judges chooses the artist to receive the scholarship. The nominated experts are not part of the jury and change every two years.
Since 2008, external, independent experts have been nominating the artists who can apply for the scholarship / artist in residence program for two consecutive years.
